Storing and Handling Engine Oils
Try and store your oil inside – it is best to keep oil relatively warm during winter. If storing your oil barrels outside lay them on their sides, or tilt them slightly so that the cap is at the high side, away from any water that may collect. Rinse oil containers and funnels in fuel after use. Cover them to keep out dirt, or store them upside down. When adding oil, clean all the dirt from around the filler cap before opening it.
Servicing the Lubricating System
Regularly service the engine lubricating system to prevent engine damage and premature wear. Check the crankcase oil daily allowing about 10 minutes for the oil to drain down after the engine has stopped. If oil is needed, add the recommended oil to fill to the upper mark on the dipstick. The oil in the crankcase should be changed every 100 hours or as recommended by your operator’s manual. Change the oil and the filter more often if operating in extremely dusty conditions.
Testing the Engine Oil Pressure
If the oil pressure gauge is not reading in the normal range, stop the engine at once and investigate the cause.
If the pressure is too high: Could be caused by crankcase oil being too heavy, a defective oil pressure gauge, or a stuck regulating valve or one that is out of adjustment.
If the pressure is too low: Crankcase oil level maybe down, the oil may be too thin, oil pump or engine bearings may be worn, the gauge may be faulty, or the pressure valve may require adjustment.
Changing the Oil and Filter
ü
Operate the engine until it is thoroughly heated to suspend most of the contaminants in the old oil.
ü
Shut off the engine and remove the oil drain plug.
ü
Allow the oil to drain completely from the engine.
ü
Clean the oil filter and surrounding area before removing the filter.
ü
If the filter has a drain plug, allow the filter to drain first before removing.
ü
Remove the old filter cartridge and clean inside the filter bowl with solvent (not gasoline).
ü
Install the new filter cartridge (check that the filter is the correct one).
ü
Replace the new filter and tighten the drain plugs.
ü
Fill the crankcase with new oil, but do not overfill.
ü
Start the engine and operate it for a few minutes.
ü
Check the drain plug and filter for any oil leaks.
ü
Check the oil pressure gauge and the oil level on the dipstick.
